About the museum
Häxmuseet is at Hola folk high school in Prästmon and is run by the folk high school together with Kramfors Municipality. The museum tells the story of the witch trials in Torsåker, where 71 people were beheaded and burned on Häxberget after the trial in 1675. It is considered Sweden’s largest documented mass execution in peacetime and was part of a longer period of witch hysteria known as det stora oväsendet (the Great Commotion), 1668–1676.
The exhibition is called Tidens tro drabbar människan (The Beliefs of the Time Strike People) and uses digital and interactive technology together with traditional artistic expression to tell a dark story and raise questions about our own time. Visitors can use free Wi-Fi and free audio guides on their own phone or tablet; there are slideshows and a film kiosk.
The museum was re-inaugurated on 30 May 2026, when three new exhibition rooms about the witch trials opened. Nearby are Torsåker church, where the penance sermon was held, the dungeon (fängelsehålan) and Häxberget itself, where a memorial stone stands over the victims. Outdoors, artworks are also shown in the park in front of the museum.
