About the museum
Hallands militärhistoriska museum (Halland Military History Museum) was called Garnisons- och luftvärnsmuseet (the Garrison and Anti-Aircraft Museum) until 2023. The museum builds on the traditions of the disbanded Halland Regiment (Hallands regemente), whose first regimental museum was established in 1913 at Landalasjön, and it manages the anti-aircraft collection of the Army Museum (Armémuseum). Since 2023 the museum has been in Skedalahed in Halmstad and occupies premises of about 700 square metres.
The exhibitions are a chronological journey from the 1500s to the present day. The Danish-Swedish wars of the 1400s and 1600s were fought largely in Halland, and a special section deals with that period, including the Battle of Axtorna in 1565 in an animated reconstruction. The peacetime of the 1700s and 1800s is shown with muskets, bayonets and a cannon, and the section on the Winter War and the Second World War includes, among other things, a listening apparatus, a radar, several anti-aircraft guns and a wedding dress sewn from parachute fabric.
The collection consists of military equipment from the 1600s to the 1900s, from uniforms, weapons and medals to field exercise equipment. The museum also manages the State's collection of anti-aircraft guns, which comprises the pieces used in Swedish air defence during the 1900s; a selection is shown in the museum. In a temporary exhibition space and in the exhibition on Halmstad's history, a model of the fortress town of Halmstad from the late 1600s is shown, among other things.
