About the museum
The collection of Hallands Konstmuseum has its roots in Hallands Fornminnesförening (the Halland antiquarian association), formed in 1865, whose collections were transferred in 1887 to the newly formed Hallands Museiförening (Halland Museum Association). The association collected objects from a bygone era, saved buildings from demolition and in 1925 founded the open-air museum Hallandsgården. With the employee Erik Salvén in 1928, the question of a new museum was pursued, and in September 1933 the building on Tollsgatan was ready, financed by state lottery funds.
Over the years the museum has had various names, including Hallands museum and Länsmuseet i Halmstad (the county museum in Halmstad). Since 2011 its activities have focused on art under the name Hallands Konstmuseum, and it is part of Stiftelsen Hallands länsmuseer (the Halland County Museums Foundation) together with Hallands kulturhistoriska museum. A conversion and extension was completed in 2019.
The collection consists of almost 5,000 registered items of art from Halland, including works by the Halmstadgruppen, Thea Ekström, Olle Bærtling and Lotta Antonsson, but also photography, design, arts and crafts and slöjd (traditional crafts). The exhibitions always show a selection from the collection. The museum also manages Bildstationen, a picture collection with around 200,000 photographs from Halland.
