About the museum

Halmstads idrottsmuseum is run by Halmstads Idrottshistoriska Förening (Halmstad Sports History Association) and opened in 2006 in the Fattighuset (Poorhouse) at Lilla torg in Halmstad. From 2012 the museum was in Halmstad Arena, and today the association has its bright premises at Halmstads slott, where it cooperates with the associations Gamla Halmstad (Old Halmstad) and Hemslöjden (Home Crafts) under the name Kultur på Slottet (Culture at the Castle).

The museum collects objects, pictures and a library about the history of sport in Halmstad, Hylte and Laholm. In parallel, the association is building a digital museum in which every sports club that has existed in the area gets its own archive with pictures, documents, films and objects. The work of digitising the history of about 840 clubs earned the association the title Årets idrottshistoriska förening (Sports History Association of the Year) 2022.

The association also holds café evenings a few times a year, where well-known sports personalities talk about their careers, and it shows temporary exhibitions.
