About the museum
The Världskulturmuseet was formed in 1999, when the agency Statens museer för världskultur (Swedish National Museums of World Culture) was created. It was previously called Göteborgs etnografiska museum (Gothenburg Museum of Ethnography) and is today one of the agency's four museums. The other three, the Etnografiska museet, the Medelhavsmuseet and the Östasiatiska museet, are in Stockholm. The agency's head office is in Gothenburg.
The museum opened in its present building on Södra vägen in December 2004. The building was designed by the architects Cécile Brisac and Edgar Gonzalez and sits on a slope between the Liseberg rock and Södra vägen, with a concrete section facing the road and a glass atrium facing Liseberg. It shared the Kasper Salin Prize in 2004 and has an area of about 11,000 square metres.
The museum's collections range from several thousand years ago to the present. The exhibition Tillsammans (Together) for children aged 0–12 and their adults opened in 2015, and the exhibition Korsvägar (Crossroads), about global collections, unique places and humanity's shared questions, opened in 2016 and is continuously being expanded.
