About the museum
Mjällomsvikens motormuseum was founded in the 1990s by Yngve Gerdin, a local entrepreneur who, after handing over his tool company, began collecting, restoring and running old engines as a hobby. Together with like-minded friends he got many engines from the 1950s running again, and the collection grew until a museum emerged.
Fishing was for a long time an important industry in Höga Kusten, and the first engines in the collection come from fishing boats in the area. The museum shows hot-bulb engines, petrol and paraffin engines, outboard motors, fishing boats and fishing gear, tractors and crushers. The oldest engine is from 1903 and was made by Skandia and Seffle motorfabrik. Particularly valuable are the older low-speed engines with freewheel governors.
Mjällom has been an industrial community for over a hundred years, with sawmills, salteries, crispbread bakeries and shoe factories. The museum by Mjällomsviken preserves part of this industrial heritage. Next to it is a small hostel with sea views.
