About the museum

Mannaminne in Häggvik in Nordingrå, in the middle of the World Heritage site High Coast (Höga Kusten), was founded in 1980 by the artist Anders Åberg (1945–2018). Before 1980 there were no buildings on the wooded hillside. The first museum, Kustmuseet (Coast Museum), opened in 1989 in a restored cowshed, followed by Jordbruksmuseet (Farming Museum) in 1990. Since then the site has grown to about 50 buildings, most of them purpose-built in lösvirke (loose-timber) houses.

Anders Åberg was originally a painter and became known for decorations and public art, including in the Solna metro station. With Mannaminne he wanted to show how culture, history, technology and influences from elsewhere are connected. Art is therefore a recurring element, and several of the buildings are themselves works of art.

On the site there are museums about the coast, fishing and sawmilling, farming, technology and cars, accordions, Norway during the Second World War, a Hungarian peasant home (ungerskt bondhem), the World Heritage site High Coast and a bureaucracy museum (byråkratimuseum). There are also trams and locomotives, a wooden globe, an art hall, a library, Barnens hus (Children's House) and a stave church from 2000, built after Norwegian models.

The operation is owned and developed by a foundation with support from Kramfors Municipality and Region Västernorrland. Hotels and inns are run by their own companies.
