About the museum
Holen homestead museum was created by the artist and heritage conservationist Gustaf Ankarcrona (1869–1933) in the years 1910–1911. His interest in the old Dalarna culture was awakened at a home crafts exhibition in Gävle in 1901, and the same year he moved to Dalarna. In 1908 he bought the Spegel-Holen area in Tällberg, with a view over Lake Siljan. Out in the villages he bought old log buildings and had them moved here, and for himself he had a combined dwelling and studio built.
Ankarcrona wanted to show how earlier generations had lived, and at the same time to show the log-building craft (timringskonst) of the Siljan region. He took the initiative for founding the first home crafts association in rural Sweden, in Leksand in 1904, and on his advice the Dalarna Heritage Federation (Dalarnas hembygdsförbund) was founded at Holen in 1915, the first county federation in Sweden.
Holen was donated in 1920 to Leksands hemslöjdsförening (Leksand Home Crafts Association) and was able to receive its first visitors in 1934. Today the farm is owned and managed by Leksand Municipality, and since 1985 it has been a protected building (byggnadsminne). Visitors can see Ankarcrona's study and studio, with a selection from his collection of folk art objects, and in the houses tools and utensils from traditional farming are shown. Holen is above all a memorial farm to its creator.
