About the museum
The poet Erik Axel Karlfeldt (born 1864 in Karlbo, south of Avesta) gladly visited the Siljan region from the turn of the century, often at the invitation of Anders and Emma Zorn in Mora. When he bought a smaller farm from the 1600s in the Leksand village of Sjugare in 1921, he could become a permanent Dalarna resident. The farm, called Sångs, was taken into use in spring 1922, after the simple cottage had been extended and rebuilt under the direction of the architect Gustaf Ankarcrona. It became a small manor-like building with a weaving room, a gateway (portlider), a cottage for the boys and a stable. When an old cottage from the area was attached to the barn, the enclosed farm was finished.
The garden was planned in consultation with the landscape architect Ester Claesson, the country's first female landscape architect, and is the only well-preserved one of her gardens. It has terraces with warming walls, a pleasure garden with a babbling well modelled on a medieval example, and a summerhouse, as well as roses, shrubs and fruit trees. The Morarosen (Mora rose), a hybrid that Emma Zorn donated in the 1920s, is among the rarities.
Karlfeldt spent his free summers and winters here, and most of the poems in his last collection, Hösthorn (Autumn Horn), are dated at Sjugare. Since summer 1992 the farm has been kept open during the summer under the owner's management, now on a smaller scale.
