About the museum
Naturum Dalarna is located at the top of Björkberget in the Siljansnäs nature reserve, with views over the Siljan district, about 14 kilometers north-west of Leksand. The facility opened in 1983 under the name Naturum Siljansnäs and was inaugurated by King Carl XVI Gustaf. After extensions and new exhibitions it was given the name naturum Dalarna in 2007, and today it is the largest naturum in Sweden by floor area.
The exhibitions deal with Dalarna’s nature: the forest and its plants and animals, the predators, the diversity of the cultivated landscape, and the geology with the traces of the meteorite impact that created the Siljan Ring, and, from 2026, the Dalälven river. The building is single-storey, and the operation is run by the County Administrative Board of Dalarna.
At the naturum there is a 32-metre-high wooden lookout tower, nine storeys high, and in the nature reserve a roughly 2-kilometre forest path and the child-friendly HumleBumlestigen (Bumblebee Trail) lead on. There is also a butterfly garden, a bee pavilion and Buffils Annas äng (Buffil Anna’s meadow).
