About the museum

Barkeryds hembygdsförening (local heritage society) was founded in 1963. In 1969 the association bought a former cobbler's croft (skomakartorp) in Erikstorp, about one kilometre west of Barkeryd church. The residential building was built as a one-room cottage (enkelstuga) in 1840 and extended into a double-room cottage (parstuga) in the 1880s. The farm was opened as a homestead museum on the first Sunday in August 1970. Today the upper floor houses a weaving room, while the lower floor is used for meetings and refreshments.

The agricultural museum was planned from 1973 and opened in 1976. It is housed in a two-storey building in barn style and shows tools and machines from the development of agriculture between 1700 and 1950. One room is furnished as a school room with objects from four closed schools in the parish.

More older houses have been moved to the site. The Sethastugan, formerly the coachman's house at the Sund-Äng glassworks, holds an exhibition about the glassworks, and the Källerydsstugan from the early 1800s is furnished with various exhibitions. A general store from Äng has been set up with goods, counters and shelves from a store from 1915, and an exhibition tells the story of emigration from the parish, which took off when Sven Magnus Swensson left Barkeryd in 1836. During the summer the association organises Sunday openings with entertainment, guided tours and refreshments, as well as an annual homestead festival (hembygdsfest).
