About the museum
Nässjö was a small rural parish before the railway arrived. The Southern Main Line (Södra stambanan) reached the place in 1864, and Nässjö became a town in 1914. As early as the 1930s the local heritage society began to take an interest in the railway’s cultural heritage, and by 1965 the activity had grown so much that a special railway section was formed, Södra Stambanans museisektion (Southern Main Line Museum Section).
In 1994 the museum became an independent non-profit association, and its basic exhibition was inaugurated in 1996. The association is based at Ångsågen, an area named after a former steam sawmill. Indoors the history of the railway is shown with an emphasis on Nässjö, including a station office, how a steam engine works, railway workers’ tools and collections of uniform badges, signals and locomotive emblems.
Outdoors on the railway yard stand locomotives and carriages from the 20th century. The vehicle park includes, among others, the steam locomotive KJ 17 and the electric locomotive Ra 987, a train from the 1960s with first- and second-class carriages, and several older carriages. The highlight is the steam railcar from the Halmstad–Nässjö Järnväg from 1888. The association also runs museum trains for the public and for private trips.
