About the museum

Wira Bruk was founded in the 1630s by the admiral and privy councillor Clas Fleming. The power of the River Wiraån drove the great hammers of the forges, and in 1635 the works received its first privilege. Skilled blade smiths were recruited from Solingen in Germany, and Wira soon became Sweden’s leading weapons forge during the Age of Greatness (stormaktstiden). In 1646 the works received the privilege of supplying rapiers and sabres to the Crown.

When the need for weapons declined, production switched to works products, above all scythes and axes, and during the 19th century Wira was one of the country’s leading scythe works. Forging continued into the 20th century but ceased in 1948. In the 1960s the old works environment was restored, and since 1969 the works and the smithies have been managed by Stiftelsen Wira bruk (the Wira Bruk Foundation).

Today visitors can walk through the works environment and the old smithies, visit Wira museum in the 18th-century Åldermansstugan (the alderman’s house), look into the art smithing shop and eat in the old Tingshuset (court house). The museum shows weapons and works products made at Wira, as well as pictures and documents from the history of the works.
