About the museum

Husarö was a pilot station from 1740 to 1912, and the pilots guided ships southwards towards Sandhamn and Berghamn and northwards towards Oxhalsö and Furusund. The Lotsmuseet (Pilot Museum) is housed in the Sundströmska lotsgården, which was the home of Reinhold Sundström (1866–1942), the island's last pilot elder (lotsålderman).

The collections began to be built up in 1990 by Åke Öhman (1924–2009), who for many years collected objects and also researched the history of pilotage. The collections describe both pilotage and archipelago life. The association Husarö Lotsmuseum was formed in 2004 to run and develop the museum, and since 2013 the museum has been part of the association Husarö Lotsmuseum och Hembygdsförening, which also includes the local heritage association and the Bystugan (village cottage).

A historic walking loop with four signs tells the story of the island's pilot history and strawberry growing. It goes via the Bystugan and Lotsberget, the island's highest point, to Hemgärdet and the museum.
