About the museum
The idea for a caravan museum in Dorotea was raised in the late 1970s by Polar's managing director at the time, Örian Gradin, but the museum did not open until 1999. It is run by the caravan manufacturer Polar, which has existed since 1964. The first Polar caravan was built in Junselevallen, but after a fire at the factory in 1966 production moved to newly built premises in Dorotea in 1968, where the company still has its factory.
The museum is in a carefully renovated barn from around 1900, opposite the factory along the E45. It shows how caravans have developed from the 1960s onwards, together with period camping gear and photographs from different years. Among the objects are the third Polar caravan ever made, matching tracksuits, a folding camping table and plastic crockery.
The museum is described as Sweden's, and perhaps the world's, only caravan museum, and it is open in summer.
