About the museum
Lars-August stuga is originally a so-called poorhouse (fattigstuga) from the 18th century, a simple dwelling that the parish made available to people who could not support themselves. The cottage is named after Lars-August Johansson (1871–1956), who for many years lived as an itinerant peddler (gårdfarihandlare) in the district.
Lars-August pulled a two-wheeled cart with a tin box and sold small wares such as buttons, needles, socks and elastic bands. He was a well-known sight on the country roads, often in high snow boots, and he had a gift for talking up his goods. When he came into a cottage he set the box in the middle of the floor, knelt beside it and took out his wares, and he entertained the customers with stories and a mischievous look.
Today the cottage is cared for by Ryda local heritage society, which counts it among the district’s preserved sights together with the Skvaltkvarnen mill at Almesåsen, the ryggås cottage in Åshult, the carpentry workshop in Ekebacka and Eklundsstugan. The cottage lies by Gerbodavägen, where several fitness trails pass, and on the site there is a barbecue area, a shelter and an outdoor privy.
