About the museum

Idrottsmuseet i Göteborg was founded in 1983 by the foundation Idrottsmusei Vänner (Friends of the Sports Museum). The idea of a museum for the sports movement was raised as early as the 1950s, when, among other things, archive material from Ullevi, sports press and prize collections had begun to be gathered. After a municipal inquiry at the end of the 1970s, the foundation was formed as the museum's principal organiser.

The museum is located in the old barracks buildings in Kviberg. The premises were rebuilt in 2003 and have since consisted of three floors. The collections comprise over 15,000 objects and around 30,000 photographs, many of them donated or deposited by athletes and their relatives.

The best-known parts include prize collections after, among others, Eric Lemming, Ingemar Johansson, Aina Berg, Hjördis Töpel and Kerstin Palm. Since 1999 the museum has also run the Göteborgs Hall of Fame, which is expanded every year with new members from the history of Gothenburg sport.
