About the museum

Kortedala Museum is an ordinary two-room apartment with a kitchen in an apartment block on Adventsvägen in Kortedala, Gothenburg. The apartment has been furnished with furniture and objects that were common between 1955 and 1965, and it shows how people lived during the first decades of the folkhem (the people’s home). Kortedala was built in the 1950s as one of Gothenburg’s first large suburban districts.

The museum is run by Kortedala Museiförening (Kortedala Museum Association). Visitors can see how people moved into a new apartment and what modern kitchens and household appliances looked like, and get an insight into everyday life with sewing circles, television viewing and youth in the 1950s. The museum cooperates with Retrovägen and has taken part in the SVT series Så byggdes Sverige (How Sweden Was Built).

The museum sells the booklet Tingens betydelser – ikoner från folkhemsepoken (The Meaning of Things – Icons of the Folkhem Era). Admission is free during opening hours and voluntary contributions are accepted; groups can book a viewing at other times.
