About the museum

Iggesunds bruk was founded in 1685 and was burnt by Russian troops in 1721, after which it was rebuilt. Gustav Tamm bought the old ironworks in 1869 and had built the plant that still stands today. Steel was made using the Bessemer process, and the two converters from 1872 still stand in their original place. A Lancashire forge was added later, and from 1905 there was also pulp production.

The preserved blast furnaces were built in 1874 and 1895. Pig-iron blowing ceased in 1952, and ironworks operations were closed down in the early 1950s. The buildings from the 1870s–1890s are largely built of slag stone and brick, and the plant was designated a listed building in 1990. It was restored in 1972–1987 and has since then functioned mainly as a museum.

Today the works museum shows the roasting furnace, the blast furnace, the converter and the Lancashire forge, together with an exhibition on the handling of iron and a documentary film that was made while the works was in operation. A special exhibition deals with forestry and sawmill history, and in the office environments working life around the works can be seen. The premises are also used for concerts and theatre.
