About the museum
Jädraås bruk was established in 1856–1857 by Ockelboverken at the Jädraån river, near the mines at Vintjärn and with good access to water power. The furnace was rebuilt several times before it received its final appearance during 1905–1915, and in 1905 a Lancashire forge with a steam forge hammer went into operation. The forge was expanded in 1914 and was one of the country's largest of its kind.
The works' heyday was over already in the early 1930s. The blast furnace was shut down on 22 August 1930, and operations in the forge ceased completely in 1942. After that, forestry became the district's main industry.
The Föreningen Jädraås Bruk (Jädraås Bruk association) was formed in 1990 to renovate and care for the furnace and the Lancashire forge. Today visitors can walk through the furnace with information signs and QR codes that give more facts about each place, and the works environment is of national interest for cultural heritage conservation. In 2020 Jädraås was named Årets industriminne (Industrial Heritage of the Year) by the Svenska industriminnesföreningen (Swedish Industrial Heritage Association). Nearby is the museum railway Jädraås–Tallås Järnväg.
