About the museum
Marmormuseet is located in the old works community of Marmorbyn in Vingåker municipality and tells the story of Gropptorp marble and the marble industry in the district. The grey-green marble has been quarried in the area for a long time: already in the Middle Ages monks from Julita monastery burned lime from the stone, and from the 1860s it was quarried as building stone for facades, floors and staircases.
Gropptorps Marmor AB was founded in 1918, and in the 1930s the company had around 120 employees. In 1937 construction of the Marmorbyn works community for the workers began. The works produced, among other things, mortars, jewellery and office items, and skilled stonemasons made gravestones and figures. Quarrying ceased in 1970.
The museum was inaugurated in May 2017 and is a memorial to Gropptorps Marmor AB, the company that founded the community. The collection consists of objects made at the works and shows the district's marble industry.
