About the museum
Tallsätters school was built around 1855 as a junior school (småskola) at Lergropen in Österåker parish. In 1882 it was moved to Tallsäter, which was more central, and in connection with the move a changing room was added, which today serves as the entrance hall with stairs to the upper floor. The building is in Falu red, long, narrow and tall, with an authentic schoolroom on the ground floor and a teacher's residence above.
Teaching ceased in 1953, when the new central school (centralskola) in Österåker was built. The school was then rented out to summer guests. It was inaugurated as a municipal school museum on 4 July 1970, and in 1973 Vingåker municipality transferred the museum to Österåker local heritage society, which owns and runs it today. The building was renovated externally in 2006.
The museum shows what a village school looked like and how schooling worked in the countryside up to the 1950s. It is shown by arrangement with the local heritage society.
