About the museum

The Psalmodikonmuseet in the Östervåla churchyard opened in 1995 in connection with the jubilee meeting of the Nordic Psalmodikon Association in Östervåla. The initiative came from the association's then chairman Rodney Sjöberg, together with Östervåla parish. The museum was formerly called Dillnermuseet, after the priest Johan Dillner (1785–1862), who was vicar of Östervåla and spread the psalmodikon in Sweden.

At first the museum was housed in a tower room on the second floor of Östervåla church, but the following year it moved to its own building in the churchyard. The first exhibition was called “Psalmodikon förr, nu och i framtiden” (“The psalmodikon past, present and future”) and was dedicated to Johan Dillner.

Today the museum holds some forty psalmodikons and tells the story of the instrument's history, use and significance for psalm singing. In the 19th century the psalmodikon was used in church, school and home to support singing. In the churchyard are also the graves of Dillner and of Lars Paul Esbjörn, who took the psalmodikon with him to America. As far as is known, the museum is the only one in the world devoted entirely to the instrument.
