About the museum
Egon Klints Sojdemuseum is located in a tar kiln house (tjärdal) with roots in the 17th century at Västerlaus in Burs in southern Gotland. The museum has been built up in the pine forest around an old såide or sojde, that is, a place for tar burning, and is run by Burs hembygdsförening (local heritage association).
Egon Klint, who was a fiddler, shoemaker, artist and cultural personality, collected tools and other objects from the old agrarian society. The collection is now in the museum and shows the tar production and daily life of rural society until the tools began to be driven by electricity or combustion engines.
Until the 20th century, fishing, tar and lime were the most important sources of income for Gotland's farmers. In addition to the tar kiln house itself, several smaller buildings on the museum site contain exhibits on households, crafts, smithing, farming, fishing and local defence. The sojde is also a popular place for local events, with an annual barbecue party and an afternoon with local musicians.
