About the museum

Birger Kristensson was born at Vanges gård in 1923 and worked there as a farmer for 55 years. Alongside farming, he began collecting farm objects from all over Gotland at an early age, and the collection grew over the years.

In 1997, when Birger turned 75, he decided to show the collection to the public. Together with Burs hembygdsförening (local heritage society), the doors were opened to an exhibition area of just over a thousand square metres. Birger continued to live on the farm and showed his objects until his death in March 2015.

In 2000 he donated the entire farm and collection to the newly formed Stiftelsen Vanges Museigård (Vanges Museigård Foundation), which has been responsible for the museum ever since. Today there are over 10,000 objects from agriculture, households, fishing and technology, and many of them are in such good condition that the tractors can be driven and the sewing machines are ready to use. The museum also shows Birger's own inventions, such as a steam engine, a ride-on grass cutter and a self-propelled rollator.
