About the museum
Skansen Klintaberg was built in 1943–1944 to strengthen Sweden’s western border. Work began on 12 May 1943 and was completed on 1 June 1944. The fortification lies on a steep rock ledge that drops down to lake Valsjön, next to county road 340 between Hotagen and Valsjöbyn, close to the border with Norway, which was then German-occupied.
The fortification consists of two large rock chambers, about twenty smaller shelters, trenches and communication passages. The Swedish Armed Forces used the installation as part of its fixed defence until the 1980s.
Today the fortification is shown on guided walks. With a focus on children and young people, the visit aims to remind visitors of the war and of the abuses committed against people before and during the 1940s, and shows how the war affected people in the Hotagen district. The fortification cooperates with the fortress installation Austrått-Klintaberg at Ørland in Norway.
