About the museum
Rönnöfors ironworks was established from 1845 by mining engineer Karl Ferdinand de Ron, who had moved from Åflohammar works in Åflo. At the rapids between Rönnösjön and Landösjön a blast furnace, bar-iron hammers (stångjärnshammare), a manor building, offices and warehouses were built, and houses, a school and a chapel were erected alongside the works. The ore came mainly from the Örnstol mine (Örnstolgruvan), but also from the Grötom mine (Grötomsgruvan) in Kall and from the bogs around Rännön.
At the works household utensils, stove plates and iron stoves were cast, while wrought goods such as axes, nails and ploughs were made in Åflo and Långforsen. Operations continued under various owners until 1872, after which the works was only in use intermittently. In 1926 parts of the works were demolished, but remains survive. The blast furnace is one of Sweden’s few preserved blast furnaces built of mulltimmer.
In the blast furnace there is today a small ironworks museum, which the local heritage society shows on request. The ruin area by the river can be visited on your own.
