About the museum
Ströms local heritage society was founded in 1906 and is the oldest local heritage society in Jämtland and one of the oldest in Sweden. The society’s first farm was established in 1930 at Gärde, and the following year, 1931, the parish clerk’s cottage (sockenskrivarestugan) was built. It became the society’s first own home and its first place for collecting and showing objects connected with the history of the district. The collections grew quickly through donations.
Today the heritage farm lies in the middle of Strömsund, overlooking Ströms vattudal. On the site there are 26 buildings that tell of life in the past, including the Samiska Vistet (Sámi viste) and various historic settings, and exhibitions on, among other things, the Strömsund bridge and folk costumes.
At the heritage farm there is also Kafé Tomten in the Tant Elise farm, Lekfjöset (the play farm) where children can look after animals (trädjur) and try old-fashioned farm life, and a craft fair in summer. During the year, among other events, national day celebrations, midsummer celebrations, Hembygdsgårdens dag (heritage farm day) and a Christmas market are held.
