About the museum
Kulturfabriken is located in a former shoe factory in Mjällom and is a meeting place for the community on the Mjällom peninsula. The building houses a museum on Mjällom's history, an art and craft exhibition with local exhibitors, a flea market and a café.
Mjällom has been an industrial community for more than a hundred years. The shift from farming, forestry and fishing began in the late 19th century with Måviken sawmill, followed by salteries and crispbread bakeries. Shoe manufacturing started in 1919 and at its peak employed up to 500 people. The shoe factories needed subcontractors, which led to a mechanical workshop and cardboard production in the village.
The facility also has information about the High Coast World Heritage Site (Världsarvet Höga Kusten), with a model of the Mjällom peninsula and a screening room.
