About the museum
Långmaren is a museum farm in the Nynäs nature reserve between Nyköping and Trosa. The farm was traditionally farmed until 1967, when Södermanland County Council (landstinget i Södermanland; today Region Sörmland) took over the Nynäs lands. The last tenant, Ivar Karlsson (1902–1993), became known as one of the last farmers in Sweden to use only oxen as draught power.
The farm has an old-fashioned character, largely thanks to its many outbuildings: a storehouse with a milk room, a carpentry workshop, a cowshed, a loge, sheep and pig houses, a henhouse, an earth cellar and a wash house. Many traditional field fences (gärdesgårdar) reinforce the impression. The main house shows Södermanland peasant history and works as a time machine back to the 1940s.
The buildings and the surroundings are a protected building and are part of the nature reserve. The farm can be visited from the outside all year round, and several events are held during the summer. The meadows and pastures around the farm have rich plant and insect life, including field gentian and the red-listed large marsh grasshopper (trumgräshoppa).
