About the museum
Sörmlands museum was founded in 1913 as the association Södermanlands länsmuseum. The state made the Old Residence (Gamla Residenset) at Nyköpingshus available, and the museum’s first exhibition opened there in 1918. The collections were built partly on objects from Södermanlands fornminnesförening (the Södermanland Antiquarian Society), founded in 1860. The museum grew during the 20th century, with a castle museum in the Kungstornet and, later, an art hall.
In the 1940s the museum gained more space when the old gasworks building in Nyköping was bought and the town donated the land. The museum building now stands in Nyköping’s western harbour, opposite Nyköpingshus, and is a county museum active throughout Södermanland.
In the museum building you can see permanent exhibitions such as Historiska ögonblick i Nyköping, about the town from 1850 to the present; Berättande magasin, with visible collections; the children’s exhibition Vara barn; Harald Gripe’s model theatre Upp med ridån!; and furniture from the Nordiska Kompaniet workshops in Nyköping. There are also temporary exhibitions, study rooms and a library, a museum shop, a restaurant and a museum park with a playhouse.
