About the museum
Stadsvakten (the Town Guard) is run by Nyköpings hembygdsförening (Nyköping Local Heritage Society) and shows objects over about 1,000 square metres. The museum is in the old premises of Svalins Mekaniska Verkstad (Svalin's Mechanical Workshop), which was in operation from 1896 to 1928 and made, among other things, pumps, lathes, cheese presses and fire engines. The building is described as the town's oldest preserved industrial building.
The exhibitions deal with how industry, the textile industry and trade have shaped Nyköping. Here there is a preserved metal printing works from the 1930s, a trading store from the turn of the century, a school room with school furniture from around 1900 to the 1960s, and a Princess café with original furniture from 1955. The textile exhibition shows, among other things, the works of Ebba von Eckermann, and other sections tell of the Hult brothers' inventions, the hat-making on Västra Kvarngatan and the inn that burned down in 2009.
The house also contains Sveriges Magi-Arkiv with Christer Nilsson's magic exhibition and Gert Fredriksson's prize collection. Outside the regular opening hours, storytelling Saturdays and guided tours for groups and school classes are arranged.
