About the museum
Teckningsmuseet is the Nordic region's only museum of drawing art. The idea was born in 1983, when the artist and doctor Björn Rosendal, together with members of Böllerupakademin (the Böllerup Academy), began to collect drawings for a future museum. The Stiftelsen Laholms Teckningsmuseum (Laholm Drawing Museum Foundation) was formed in 1992, and the museum opened on 18 June 1992 in the old town hall at Stortorget. In 2000 it was renamed Teckningsmuseet i Laholm.
The collection grew and the museum became cramped, and therefore Laholm's old fire station from the 1910s was converted into museum premises to a proposal by the architect Jörgen Michelsen. The restored fire station has received a bright extension facing the river Lagan, and the museum was reopened at Hästtorget on 3 March 2007. The conversion followed the Halland model (Hallandsmodellen), in which unemployed people were trained in traditional building methods.
The collection comprises just over 25,000 drawings from the 18th century onwards by Swedish and international artists and illustrators. On the lower floor there is a drawing studio and the Laholm ceramics museum. The museum is run by Laholm Municipality and since 2007 has been especially known for exhibitions of contemporary drawing artists and illustrators.
