About the museum
The Turbinmuseet (Turbine Museum) is in the Orangeriet by Finspång Castle and tells the story of Finspång's world-leading development in turbines and energy technology. Here the industrial heritage of STAL and De Laval is brought up to the present day. The castle was built by Louis De Geer d.y. (the Younger), who laid the foundation stone in 1668, and around it the Finspång ironworks grew up. In the 1900s the town was dominated by Svenska Turbinfabriks AB Ljungström (STAL) and Finspongs Metallverk, both founded in 1913.
The collection includes the first order books of De Laval and the Ljungström brothers, payroll documents and the very first turbine sketches from the late 1800s, in excellent condition. The first thing visitors see in the entrance is a large aero engine, the Dovern, which STAL developed when the Swedish Air Force sought a Swedish jet engine for the Lansen. Thirteen test engines were built, and the one in the museum is the last. In 1952 the Air Force decided to invest in a foreign engine. STAL continued with sketches for an engine called the Glan, which was never built but became the basis for Siemens Energy's successful gas turbine business. Sweden's oldest grapevine can also be seen through the glass walls at the entrance to the Orangeriet.
