About the museum

Gruvstugan i Hällestad (the Mine Cottage in Hällestad) lies by the old mine field at Hällestad in Finspång Municipality and is used by Hällestads hembygdsförening (Hällestad Local Heritage Society). The area shows traces of how the district has been used for centuries: mine pits, the Åsebro mining area with remains of several mines and the foundation of the mine bailiff's cottage, Forsbergs gruva (Forsberg's mine), a small marble quarry and the ruin of a lime kiln. In the shed behind the mine cottage there is a recreated environment showing what it was like to work in the mines. On the site stands the crofter's cottage Skogalund, also called Långvänta, which was moved here.

The local heritage society and Holmen upgraded the hiking trail in 2024. It is four kilometres long, with many information signs along the way. The trail runs, among other things, along the old railway that went through the area. Guided tours are held at the mine cottage, and Gruvspelet (the Mine Play) is an open-air theatre production performed in the area.
