About the museum
AB Lönsboda Korgfabrik was started in 1918 on the initiative of Julius Håkansson, who had learned basket-making from his father-in-law. The factory building was erected the same year and equipped with machines driven by belts from a line shaft in the ceiling. The power first came from a portable steam engine, but already in 1919 a contract for an electricity connection was signed. The company went into liquidation in 1921, and the farmer Olof Bengtsson took firm hold of the business, became managing director in 1922 and took over the whole enterprise in the 1940s.
The factory was at its largest and had the most employees in the 1940s and 1950s. In addition to splint baskets (spånkorgar), cheese boxes of splints for soft cheese were made. When plastic arrived it outcompeted the splint baskets as packaging, and finally Olof Bengtsson worked alone in the factory until 1978.
After his death in 1982 Örkeneds hembygdsförening (Örkened local heritage association) bought the site, and the building with its fittings was donated to the association, which took over the factory in 1984. The association renovated the house and prepared it as a museum. The factory building has been declared a listed building since 2009. The workshop on the ground floor and the production premises on the upper floor remain largely unchanged, with belt-driven machines and tools.
