About the museum

Gylsboda is a small works village that grew up around the diabase quarrying. The quarrying began in the late 19th century and still continues in an active quarry next to the village. Harry Martinson lived in Gylsboda as a child, which he depicts in the novel Nässlorna blomma.

Sliperiet Gylsboda (the Grinding Works Gylsboda) is a non-profit association that has restored the old facility into an art and culture centre. The association wants to preserve the cultural heritage and the art and craft tradition that has marked the district, and it has workshops for working artists. The work has been supported by the EU's Leader programme, the County Administrative Board, Osby Municipality and a grassroots fundraising campaign. In 2020 the association was named Årets hembygdsförening i Sverige (Sweden's Local Heritage Society of the Year).

In the house there is a permanent exhibition with older photographs from the diabase quarrying, and one with art and craft. The mineral and fossil collection, which was previously shown here, is today at Lekoseum. Walking loops with sculptures run around Sliperiet, and the village's biggest event is Gylsboda Festival on the first Saturday in August.
