About the museum
Lövstabruk in northern Uppland is one of Sweden's best-preserved Walloon ironworks and was owned by the de Geer family for thirteen generations, from the early 1600s until 1986. After the Russian raids of 1719, the manor house was rebuilt, and its salons, library and kitchen reflect both a magnificent home and the centre of one of the country's largest ironworks.
In 1986 the de Geer family donated a large quantity of objects, which makes it possible to show how the manor house looked at different times. Today the Stiftelsen Leufsta (Leufsta Foundation), which rents the manor house, is responsible for the public museum activity there. Visitors can walk through the Sidensalongen (Silk Salon), the Rokokorummet (Rococo Room), the dining room, the libraries and the historic kitchen, and see, among other things, a wall clock with a built-in musical mechanism and a rare harpsichord from the late 1600s.
In the old mill is Barnens Bruk (Children's Works), a cultural-historical experience environment in the form of a playhouse, created by the author and artist Sven Nordqvist together with the artist Leif Högström. There children and adults can explore a smithy, a mine, the works shop, the school and the root-vegetable cellar. In the works environment there is also, among other things, the 18th-century library, the Smedsbostaden (smith's dwelling), the works church with the famous Cahman organ, and several studios and workshops.
