About the museum
In 2005 the archaeologist Maria Lingström decided to investigate stories she had heard while growing up about a medieval battlefield in her home parish of Mästerby. The battlefield was said to derive from Valdemar Atterdag's invasion of Gotland in 1361. Together with battlefield archaeologist Bo Knarrström she began investigating the area with a metal detector in the autumn of 2006, and already on the third day a battle knife 36 cm long was found.
Over the following years the investigations have continued, the most recent in the series described in 2022, and nearly 500 finds that can be linked to the battle have been made, including sword fragments, spearheads, crossbow bolts, spurs and parts of armour.
In the exhibition building about 80 metres south of Mästerby church, some of the finds are shown. The exhibition tells what is known about the battle and the battlefield, and shows how the archaeological investigations were carried out. During the season, guided walks on the battlefield are also offered.
