About the museum
Tjuls station, with the station building and outbuildings, was built in 1898 when the railway line between Klintehamn and Roma was constructed. After the railway was closed down, the station was preserved thanks to Gunnar Ahlström from Eskelhem, who bought the property and put roofs on all the buildings. He wanted the house to be kept in its original condition, and his children have continued in the same spirit.
Ylva Rudin and Ingvar Jakobsson bought the property in 2002 to start a museum and show the station environment to the public. The chimney and tiled stove were renovated, as were the roof and interior walls, the cowshed and the food cellar. The furnishings have over the years been supplemented with period-typical objects. The museum was inaugurated in 2005 and has since then been open every summer from midsummer to early September.
The Kulturstiftelsen Tjuls station (Tjuls Station Cultural Foundation) was formed in 2013, and the property was declared a listed building (byggnadsminne) in September 2021. The museum shows the everyday life of the station master and his family: besides handling arriving and departing trains, they grew their own food and kept a cow, a pig and hens. In the office there are a ticket cabinet, a goods ledger (godsliggare) and the station master's working tools, and in the waiting room there are pictures of the station buildings along the Klintehamn–Roma line. There is no electricity or electronics at the station.
