About the museum

Teatermuseet för scen- och manegekonst (Museum of Stage and Circus Arts) is run by the association Scen & Manegemuseum, which was formed in 1981 by a group of fourteen people to collect memories of Malmö's theatre life. The activity is carried entirely by volunteers, and from 1990 the city of Malmö covered the rent of the premises on Kalendegatan, which were in the Ärkebiskopsgården (Archbishop's Manor), a historic house with roots going back to the 1400s.

The association collects, preserves and exhibits objects and documents about theatre, stand-up, film, poetry, dance, posters, variety, circus and related activities, with Skåne as its catchment area. The collections include, among other things, the archives of the Hippodromen and Malmö stadsteater (Malmö City Theatre) and several other theatres, as well as material on Nils Poppe and Edvard Persson.

When the city of Malmö withdrew its operating grant, the museum left Kalendegatan and moved to Södra Förstadsgatan 130, where it remains until June 2027. Around thirty senior members work at the museum with exhibitions, archives and guided tours, and the association arranges talks, lectures and theatre performances.
