About the museum
Teknikens och sjöfartens hus, formerly Malmö tekniska museum, is one of the buildings of Malmö Museum and lies diagonally opposite Malmöhus slott (Malmöhus Castle). The building displays machines and engines, vehicles and craft, exhibitions on the sea and seafaring and the history of science. It houses the Idéplaneten experiment centre, a play room for children, and Wisdome Malmö, a visualisation dome with dome theatre.
The museum's largest object is the submarine U3, one of nine smaller coastal submarines built in Sweden during the Second World War. U3 was built at the Karlskrona örlogsvarv (naval dockyard), was in service until 1964 and was towed from Gothenburg to Malmö in 1965. The submarine was divided into three sections, which were lifted onto land and transported to the museum in 1967. There they were welded together on concrete foundations, after which the interior was fitted out. Visitors can go aboard and see how the crew slept, cooked and loaded torpedoes.
Near the building runs the museum tramway, which operates in summer, and outside stands, among other things, a displayed Saab 37 Viggen aircraft.
