About the museum
Malmöhus Castle has its origins in a fortress that Erik av Pommern (Eric of Pomerania) had built in 1434. During the 16th century it was rebuilt as a Renaissance castle, and today it is counted as the oldest surviving example of its kind in the Nordic region. Danish kings stayed here during their visits to Malmö, and the castle was an important fortress on the border with Sweden.
When Skåne became Swedish in 1658, the fortifications were strengthened further. During the 18th century the fortress lost its military importance, and between 1828 and 1909 the castle was used as a prison. After restoration and conversion, the Malmö museum opened in the building in 1937. At the end of the war in 1945 the premises were used as temporary accommodation for people who had been rescued from the Nazi concentration camps.
Today the castle houses parts of Malmö Museer (Malmö Museums): historical exhibitions about the castle and the city, Malmö konstmuseum (Malmö Art Museum), with one of the country's largest collections of art, craft and design, and the Akvariet (Aquarium). The art museum was founded in 1841. The ticket is also valid for Teknikens och sjöfartens hus (House of Technology and Maritime History) on the other side of Malmöhusvägen.
