About the museum
Since December 2009 Moderna Museet has had two locations, one in Stockholm and one in Malmö. The Malmö branch is in John Smedberg's power station from 1901, a brick building extended with a striking orange addition designed by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter.
The Moderna Museet collection comprises more than 130,000 works, of which about 100,000 are photographs. It began with Swedish and Nordic art, French-oriented modernism and American art from the 1950s and 1960s, and has since been expanded with pioneering female artists from the 20th century onwards and art in a globalised world.
The Malmö branch has its own exhibition programme of contemporary artists and modernist classics, often together with selections from the collection. The museum also offers educational activities for children and adults and a broad programme of public events.
