About the museum
The steam icebreaker Bore was built in 1894 at Kockums mekaniska verkstad in Malmö. In the late 1800s Malmö suffered several icy winters, when the harbour and parts of the Öresund were covered in ice, and the harbour authority felt it needed its own icebreaker. Bore broke up the ice in Malmö harbour, helped ships that had frozen fast in the Öresund and could sometimes assist or replace the ferry service between Malmö and Copenhagen. She served as an icebreaker for over 70 years.
Today Bore is the world's oldest steam-powered icebreaker and has been restored to essentially its original 1894 condition, both on deck and below, where crew cabins and passenger saloons remain. The original steam engine still works, and the ship can move under its own power.
Malmö Municipality has owned the ship since 2023 and works with the non-profit association Ångisbrytaren Bores vänner (Friends of the Steam Icebreaker Bore) to look after her. Bore is moored at Skeppsbrokajen and is a floating reminder of Malmö's history as a shipyard and port city.
