About the museum
The sawmill on Norrbyskär started in 1895 and was built by Frans Kempe together with Mo och Domsjö. It grew into one of Europe's largest sawmills. Kempe also had a model settlement built, with a church, school, shop and workers' housing, and in the 1920s over 1,200 people lived or worked on the island. Sawmilling ceased in 1952, and KFUM (the YMCA) has been at the site since 1953.
The museum is housed in the old steam engine house and tells the story of the complete sawmill community. There is a miniature model of the island with touch screens that tell about selected buildings, and the Kemperummet (Kemp Room), where visitors can listen to Kempe's plans for the archipelago. On the Norrbyskärståget (Norrbyskär train) you can ride round the island and hear its history, and children can visit Lilla Norrbyskär, an open-air museum with small houses that are copies of the old sawmill community. On the island there is also art, a photo exhibition, a shop, a second-hand shop, a restaurant and a museum café. In 2026 Norrbyskärs sågverks- och mönstersamhälle (the Norrbyskär sawmill and model settlement) was named Industrial Heritage of the Year.
