About the museum
Nynäshamns Järnvägsmuseum shows the history of the Nynäs line, from the building of the line to today, and the local traffic around Stockholm. The museum is in Nynäsgård’s engine shed, where the main workshop of the Stockholm–Nynäs Järnväg was located from the line’s opening in 1901 until 1959. The engine shed was completed in 1900, and there is information that it may have been designed by the architect Ferdinand Boberg. The buildings and the area are protected as cultural monuments by the County Administrative Board.
The engine shed is the only one in Stockholm County where the original work is still carried out, although today this is done on a voluntary basis. Some of the vehicles are fully restored and are used in the association’s trains, while others await restoration. Among the objects is the diesel locomotive SNJ ÖF 10 from 1936, the line’s first diesel locomotive; four tank wagons from the 1920s to the 1950s; the electric locomotives SJ litt B and N; the diesel locomotive litt T21; a diesel engine litt Z43; and the passenger carriage litt Bo6. Two two-axle passenger carriages from the early 20th century are standing for future restoration.
On the site there are also a turntable, railway signs and a lamp post from SNJ’s old head office. In an exhibition wagon, photographs and objects from the history of the Nynäs line are shown. The museum is run by a non-profit association.
