About the museum

ERSTA is an abbreviation of ersättning tungt artilleri (replacement heavy artillery). Six identical batteries were built between 1973 and 1983 along the Baltic coast, at Söderarm, Slite, Ystad, Trelleborg, Holmögadd and Landsort, to protect Sweden against a Soviet attack. They replaced older guns from the Second World War and were at the time among the world's most advanced artillery systems, with automatic-loading guns that could fire one shot every two seconds. The battery on Landsort, on the island of Öja outside Nynäshamn, was in operation from the late 1970s until 2000.

After the defence decision in 2000, all the ERSTA batteries were dismantled except the installation on Landsort, gun no. 3. The Statens fastighetsverk (National Property Board) took it over in 2010, and it was opened to the public as a museum in 2013. Since 2018 the battery has been a state-listed building (statligt byggnadsminne). The northern gun remains completely intact with its five floors straight down into the bedrock, while the other parts of the installation have been emptied and filled with concrete.

Today the installation on the northern point of Landsort is shown at pre-booked visits during the summer, and visitors experience the gun and the rock chambers from the inside.
