About the museum
Nyvångs gruvmuseum (Nyvång Mining Museum) is run by the non-profit Föreningen Nyvångs Gruva (Nyvång Mine Association), which was formed in 1984 to establish a mining museum in the shaft building “Carl Cervin”. The building had been donated by Höganäsbolaget AB (the Höganäs company) to Åstorp Municipality. The association works entirely on a voluntary basis and has about 200 members.
The museum illuminates the era when hard coal was an important product for industry and transport in Sweden. Visitors learn how the work was carried out in what is described as Scandinavia's largest coal mine, and how an entire new community was built up about a hundred years ago. The mine was in operation from 1907 to 1966.
In the museum there are full-scale models of underground work rooms with tools and machinery, geological finds from the coal mining and documentation on the history of coal. A film from 1934 about the coal mining is also shown, along with a workers' home kitchen from the 1950s, drawings and information about the mining families, and school photographs, pictures, writings and stories.
