About the museum
The idea of an aviation museum was born in 2001 in a small group within Göta Flygvapenförening (Göta Air Force Association) at the former F 9 air wing at Säve outside Gothenburg. When Aeroseum became a reality, one of the initiators moved to Österlen and brought the idea with him. In 2006 the opportunity arose to take care of another aircraft, and in December that year premises were found in a former machine station in Östra Vemmerlöv in Simrishamn Municipality. Österlens Flygmuseum is still located there today.
The museum is run by a small number of aviation enthusiasts who want to preserve military aviation history. The collection consists of privately owned aircraft and loans from the Swedish Air Force Museum (Flygvapenmuseum) in Linköping. It is kept alive through a static exhibition combined with ongoing restoration of aircraft, and in 2016 a supplementary exhibition hall was built.
The collection includes aircraft, engines, pilot seats, instrument panels and other equipment from military aviation. The technical development of the Draken era is shown through several versions of the J 35 Draken, and more recently the museum has also built up a larger collection of flying helmets and flight equipment.
